A Teacher Is Known by Their Fruits

Teacher and Tradition

Sometimes a person has been looking for a teacher for years, although in reality he is already afraid to choose. He listens to one master, then another. Reads books, compares schools, watches lectures, looks for signs, waits for inner confidence. It seems to him that a little more - and complete clarity will appear. One more answer, one more meeting, one more confirmation - and then finally it will be decided. But in spiritual life, complete confidence rarely comes from the first step. More often it is born on the way, when a person begins to act, observe, purify, change and see that the chosen direction makes him deeper.

Finding a teacher is a serious matter. Here you cannot go only for beautiful words, strong charisma or the promise of quick results. The spiritual path concerns the very basis of a person: his conscience, faith, will, heart, destiny. A mistake here is costly. Therefore, doubt at the first stage is natural. It helps you look more carefully and distinguish a living way from a beautiful form. But doubt should lead to discernment, not to eternal cessation.

A true teacher is not recognized by the way he talks about light. He is recognized by how much light there is in those who walked next to him.

Look at the students. What happens to them over the years? Have they become calmer in the face of difficulties? More honest in words? More precisely in actions? Have they gained internal support? Have they become softer with loved ones, more resilient in trials, purer in intentions? Do they have respect for life, the ability to serve, keep their word, take responsibility?

The fruit of the path is always visible in a person: if next to a teacher people lose their own face, confuse devotion with fear, repeat words without inner understanding, become dependent, tense, closed - this is a reason to stop and look deeper.

The spiritual path should make a person “more” and not “less”; “deeper”, not “blinder”; “cleaner”, not more fanatical; stronger, not more dependent.

But if, next to the teacher, people open up, strengthen their souls, become more honest, calmer, nobler, if not ostentatious spirituality appears in them, but simple human dignity, then you are no longer facing a promise. There is a fruit in front of you.

And this is where the main choice begins. You can stand at the gate all your life and say: “I’m not sure yet.” You can spend your whole life looking for an ideal teacher, ideal conditions, an ideal sign, an ideal moment… But often behind this lies not wisdom, but fear: fear of making mistakes, fear of trusting, fear of change, fear of leaving the framework of usual life.

Because a real teacher not only consoles, he shows a person what he is used to getting away from. It returns to discipline, to honesty, to responsibility, to inner work. Being around him is no longer enough to be inspired - you need to change.

Discipleship does not begin with delight. It begins with an internal decision: I am ready to go. You need to not just listen to “beautiful words” and just agree, or wait for a miracle. And do what purifies life. Maintain the chosen direction. Go through doubts, fatigue, resistance, pride, laziness and old habits.

First a person searches. Then he looks. Then he distinguishes. Then he sees the fruit. And then there must come a moment when he stops endlessly checking the path from the outside and begins to walk it from the inside.

If you doubt it, look at the fruits!

If you see the fruits, make up your mind!

I’ve decided – go!

Because spiritual life reveals itself not to those who endlessly seek confirmation, but to those who one day honestly recognize their path and begin to walk along it with respect, fidelity and living fire inside.
