Don't Wake a Sleeping Soul

Teacher and Tradition

Often a person thinks that if he sees something important, he must immediately tell everyone about it. If he has experienced the power of practice, he wants to convince his loved ones to try and immediately “enlighten” the whole family. And if he came out of a difficult internal state, he thinks that now he knows the path for everyone.

Thus begins the first test of spiritual maturity. Because the real path does not begin where a person loudly calls others to follow him - it begins where a person understands: the truth cannot be imposed.

The soul does not wake up from noise. The soul wakes up when a question has already matured within it.

Today, spirituality often becomes part of external culture: people read books, watch videos, discuss karma, meditation, energy, signs of fate, retreats, practices. But not everyone is ready for real inner work. Because real spirituality is not an interesting topic of conversation. This is a meeting with yourself. And such a meeting requires courage.

Hazrat Inayat Khan spoke about people in the sleep of delusion. This idea sounds harsh, but there is subtle wisdom in it: a dream is not always a mistake. Sometimes sleep is protection. Sometimes a person is not yet ready to see what is deeper than his usual picture of the world.

A child cannot be abruptly pulled out of sleep just because it is time for an adult to go. The child grows in his sleep. His body is maturing, his nervous system is being restored, and his internal strength is gathering.

The same thing happens with the soul. There are periods when a person lives an ordinary life, does business, builds relationships, earns money, argues, makes mistakes, experiences joys and losses. From the outside it may seem that he is far from spirituality. But hidden maturation may be taking place inside him at this time.

Why do the awakened walk quietly?

The deeper a person goes along the spiritual path, the less desire he has to argue, prove and save everyone. At the beginning of a journey, you often want to convince. Over time, an understanding comes: each person has his own rhythm.

An awakened person does not break down someone else’s door. He distinguishes: where a person is really searching, and where he is simply curious. Curiosity wants information and entertainment. Curiosity leads to wisdom.

You can give a person the wisest book, but if he is not ready yet, he will see only words in it. You can bring him to a strong practice, but if there is no mature request inside, he will perceive it as an event, impression or strange experience.

Knowledge changes a person only when there is already a place for it in him. That’s why real masters walk quietly. They don’t shout “Wake up!” They do not despise those who sleep. They don’t laugh at other people’s immaturity. They simply save the fire and give it to those who are already stretching out their hands to the light.

Sleep can also be part of the journey

Not every dream is degradation. Sometimes sleep is a phase. The person may still be too wounded to bear the truth. Or too attached to old experiences, dependent on other people’s opinions, or too scared to leave the usual life.

If such a soul is abruptly awakened, it may become frightened of the light and shut down again even more strongly. Therefore, care is not weakness, but spiritual precision.

There is a similar principle in psychology: a person is able to encounter only the amount of truth that his psyche can withstand. If you reveal too much and too sharply, instead of liberation, defense may appear: denial, irritation, aggression, devaluation, flight.

It’s the same in spiritual life: sometimes a person still needs to go through his earthly lesson and “eat up” on illusions, get tired of the superficial, face the emptiness of external success, see the price of pride, and experience the consequences of a choice. This does not mean that he should be abandoned. This means that it cannot be dragged by force.

Who can be led

The master does not give his hand to everyone. He offers his hand to someone who has already begun to wake up. And awakening often begins not with delight, but with internal anxiety. Old answers become cramped, familiar life loses its taste. Conversations that used to be fascinating begin to seem empty.

A feeling appears inside: “I forgot something,” “Why am I living?”, “Where will I go after death?” It is at this moment that a person becomes ready for the hand of the master. Not because he is weak - because he is ripe for leadership.

Why you can’t force yourself to wake up

A violent awakening almost always gives rise to resistance. If a person is not ready, he will defend his sleep. He can ridicule spirituality, devalue practice. May call everything a sect, fantasy, weakness or stupidity. Or he may be angry with someone who shows him something that he is not yet ready for.

And there is no point in arguing about this. Sometimes the wisest thing to do is walk away. Not out of coldness, but out of respect.

Spiritual maturity is the ability to help without violence. Be there when called. Be silent when the soul is still sleeping. Speak precisely when a person is really ready to hear.

The role of the master

The master is not the one who rules over the student. And not the one who demands worship. A true master helps a person remember the path to himself.

He can give knowledge. But the main thing is that it conveys the state. The words can be read in the book, and the technique can be seen in the video. But the state of depth, inner silence and composure is often transmitted only through live contact.

Spiritual work rarely changes a person instantly. It changes it through diligence, repetition, honesty, purification, discipline and inner readiness. A master is not needed for a person to become dependent - he is needed for a person to become more mature.

Love for a teacher is a memory of the heart

In spiritual traditions, the attitude towards the teacher has always been special. But it is important for a modern person to understand this soberly: love for a teacher is not blind worship of an individual. This is gratitude for the light that helped us see the road. A true teacher does not lead to himself - he leads to the Truth.

Sometimes people love a master because next to him for the first time they heard not condemnation, but direction. We saw that our own pain is not a punishment, but a door to growing up. And spirituality is not a decoration of life, but a way to purify life itself.

This kind of love is natural. Но она должна оставаться чистой: без фанатизма, без зависимости, без отказа от собственного разума. Сердце может быть благодарным, однако разум должен оставаться ясным, а практика должна вести к внутренней свободе.

Practical meaning for us

This topic concerns not only masters and students. It concerns all people - especially those who have already begun their journey and want their loved ones to change too. Help becomes help only when the other person is able to accept it.

Sometimes the best way to awaken is not with words, but with your state: to become calmer, more honest, wiser, softer in speech and purer in intention. A strong state convinces more deeply than strong arguments.

Completion

Do not rudely awaken the sleeping soul - perhaps it is still ripening. Perhaps her sleep is protecting her for now from what she cannot bear. Perhaps life itself is preparing for her a moment when the old answers will become cramped and a real question will appear inside.

But if someone is already restlessly tossing and turning inside their life, stop. Look carefully. Reach out.

This is how the real way works: without noise, without violence, without pride, with love, precision and respect. Because spirituality does not begin with the desire to wake everyone up - it begins with the ability to walk so quietly that only those who are already ready for the light wake up next to you.
